The Arab Spring The Arab Spring was a good lot of protests and uprisings in hopes of a democratic government. (basically a lot of people were marching and fighting to try and have a government that would be more representative of all the people.) The Arab spring took place in much of North Africa and the middle east. For example places like Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, and Kuwait all had protests and uprisings. The movement started in early 2010 and ended in late 2011. The movement started in Egypt and Tunisia. Their success inspired other countries to follow behind them. In Tunisia protests started in December of 2010. The government tried to end the protests and uprisings by using force and being mean but in the end they failed. The protests put enough stress on the president that he stepped down from office and left the country on January 14 of 2011. In October of 2011 Tunisia had a free election to choose members of council and draft a new constitution. (A constitution is basically a rule book that countries use to draft law from. It lists the duties and power of the government and expresses the rights of individuals in that country) Cucumber Yogurt DipHere is the recipe for Cucumber yogurt dip. Ingredients:
Instructions:
Salatet Zabadee, this cucumber dip, is light and fresh with a nice minty edge. While staples like rice, figs, bread, fava beans, and cucumbers are nearly always a common favourite. They usually dip vegetables, meats like lamb and beef, and triangles of pita bread. They mostly use this to cool down on hot summer days. Egyptian food has seen it’s fair share of influence from nearby countries like Persian, Lebanese, and Syrian. Cucumbers are high in antioxidants and they promote hydration. While yogurt is high in zinc and promotes wound healing. Cucumbers have always been popular, they even appear in a bible verse: Numbers 11:5 “We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick” I made a video, you can watch it here:

Cats were very important in Ancient Egypt. According to National Geographic Cats were believed to be magical and brought good luck to whoever took care of them. Cats were so important that anyone who killed them even if it occurred by accident would be sentenced to death. An even weirder fact is that if a cat died you had to shave off your eyebrows and mourn them until your eyebrows grew back. Cats were also mummified when they died. |
They thought pharaohs or their kings would become gods when the pharaoh died.
Mythology
Gods turn into monsters if they have enough envy, jealousy, and if they don’t feel appreciated like Tefnut and Set.
Ra is the god of the sun. Myth has it that there was water and more water then Ra came with a voice box. He created everything by saying words that filled his mouth.
These are some of the major gods in Egyptian mythology.
Gods have secret names that when you pronounce them correctly you have part of their power.
Hieroglyphs and writing tools
They made paper from papyrus by stripping it, soak it in water, and pressing it together for a long time. For pens they used reed pens that soaked up ink. They had a writing system 5,000 years ago called hieroglyphs. Hieroglyphs are pictures that represent letters or words. Most of the alphabet was somewhat based on Egyptian hieroglyphs.
